New Delhi - Burma’s detained opposition leader and Noble Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi is in need of medical attention but her family doctor, Dr. Tin Myo Win, has been detained by the junta authorities, a spokesperson of her party said.
Dr. Tin Myo Win was arrested on Thursday after visiting Aung San Suu Kyi as part of a regular medical check-up, a source who had spoken to Nyan Win, the NLD spokesperson on Saturday told Mizzima.
Dr. Tin Myo Win on Thursday waited for over three hours, but was not allowed to meet the Nobel Peace Laureate, the source said.
But, on Friday, authorities called Pyone Moe Ei, the medical assistant of Dr. Tin Myo Win and allowed her to check Aung San Suu Kyi’s health, the source said.
“She [Pyone Moe Ei] was there for about three hours and she put an intravenous drip on Aung San Suu Kyi,” the source, who did not wished to reveal his identity for fear of reprisal, told Mizzima.
Ohn Kyaing, a member of the information committee of the National League for Democracy, told Mizzima, “I don’t know why but we heard that Dr. Tin Myo Win was arrested. May be Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s health is not good.”
On Wednesday, Burmese authorities said they arrested an American man, who swam across the Innya Lake and entered the residence of Aung San Suu Kyi.
According to the New Light of Myanmar, Burma’s official newspaper, the man stayed in Aung San Suu Kyi’s lakeside villa for two nights, and was arrested on Wednesday morning while swimming back.
Aung San Suu Kyi has spent more than 12 of the past 19 years under house arrest. Her Rangoon residence cum jail, where she lives with her two maids, is heavily guarded.
She has been isolated from the outside world and is only allowed occasional visits by her doctor and lawyer.
Kyi Win, her lawyer, on Friday told Mizzima that Dr. Tin Myo Win was not allowed to meet Aung San Suu Kyi because of the uninvited visit by the American.
“Tin Myo Win was not allowed to meet Aung San Suu Kyi, because of the champion swimmer,” Kyi Win said without elaborating.
