Mizzima News - Ju Ju Kay was appointed tourism ambassador at the Miss Tourism 2010 pageant organized by the Myanmar Tourism Operators Association and will represent Burma at the TTF Thailand Tourist Promotion programme in Thailand in June.

This is the first ever Miss Tourism contest organized by Myanmar Tourism Operators Association, Vice-Chairman Thet Lwin Toe said.

The contest was held at Inya Lake Hotel last night.

"Miss Tourism 2010 fetches a cash prize of Kyat 1 million (estimate USD 10,000). She will have to attend the TTF Thailand Tourism Promotion in June, where she will be provided a MAI (Myanmar Airways International) return ticket," an official of the People Media, which will sponsor and organize the promotion told Mizzima.

The idea is to promote Burma’s tourism business in tourist attraction sites in the country, selecting a tourism ambassador and interacting with tour operators.

A report published by the Hotel and Tourism Ministry, says there are over 700 tour and travel companies in Burma.

Statistics of the ministry suggest the number of tourists in 2007 fell by 5.9 per cent compared to the previous year. But the decline in 2008 is far worse. In 2009, the business picked up and the ministry expected 1 million tourists to visit Burma in 2009-1010 tourist season.
