NLD deputy chief Tin Oo is planning eye surgery

New Delhi (Mizzima) – An opposition National League for Democracy party deputy leader, currently under care at a hospital in Rangoon, needs eye surgery, the pro-democracy veteran told Mizzima today.

NLD vice-chairman Tin Oo, 82, said he was consulting with surgeons about the required procedure at Pan Hlaing Hospital in the former Burmese capital of Rangoon.

“I’m planning to undergo eye surgery but the plan is not yet complete,” he told Mizzima. “I have an appointment with my doctors tomorrow. Since I’m getting old, my vision is not good as it used to be so I’m planning an operation to improve it.”

The repressive Burmese regime released him from six years under house arrest in February.

The news of his treatment comes after Mizzima reported yesterday that his fellow NLD leader Win Tin was admitted to Asia Taw Win Hospital in Rangoon over the weekend for an asthma attack brought on by bronchitis.

Win Tin needs to stay up to four more days in hospital, NLD central executive committee member and lawyer Nyan Win told Mizzima.

A separate NLD source said he was considering undertaking treatment outside Burma as the authorities had exerted pressure on the private hospital. The “strong-willed” NLD leader was concerned about the junta preventing him from re-entering to country after the surgery, but Mizzima was unable verify this sentiment with the patient or the hospital.
