Bali (Mizzima) – Special police guards and tanks are posted throughout Bali, Indonesia, the host of the 19th Asean Summit on Saturday and Sunday.

Burmese President Thein Sein will attend the summit along with a contingent of Burmese reporters eager to cover the news on whether Burma will be named the rotating Asean chair for 2014.

The Weekly Eleven Journal has sent a team of reporters to cover the summit events, according to its website which said that an estimated 1,500 journalists from countries around the world will attend the 19th Asean Summit meeting.

Pre-summit meetings are already underway between Asean foreign ministers and government officials from Asean member countries and other observer- countries.
U.S. President Barrack Obama will attend the third Asean-US summit meeting on Saturday.
In 2002, terrorists carried out a deadly bomb attack in Bali. For the U.S. president’s visit, Indonesian authorities have provided even tighter security than previous ceremonies held in Jakarta.

Armoured tanks are posted around the Nusa Sua Bali Hotel zone, and security checks via bomb-detection machines are carried out on every car arriving in area hotels.

Two international leaders will not attend the summit. Dmitry Medvedev, the president of Russia, an Asean ally, will take part in elections in Russia. Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra will not attend because of the severe flooding in Thailand. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will attend.
