A representative of the United Wa State Party / United Wa State Army (UWSP/UWSA) has demanded an autonomous Wa State, according to a report by the Shan Herald Agency for News (SHAN).

The comment was made on Thursday by Xiao Samkun, the UWSP/ UWSA deputy officer of external affairs, speaking at the Shan-Kayah Trust-building for Peace Conference in Lashio where several ethnic groups had met with a Myanmar government delegation to discuss the peace process.

According to SHAN, the UWSP/UWSA position was not officially discussed amongst the other participants at the conference which included President’s Office Minister Aung Min.

SHAN Editor-in-Chief Khuensai Jaiyen said that the ethnic groups need to find common ground.

“The Wa are asking for an autonomous state. That is their right,” he said. “There are people who will rise up against the Wa’s demands and we can’t stop them either. We should discuss finding [solutions] without [advocating] separation.”

The conference was attended by 180 people from 21 different groups. These included ethnic armed group leaders, Union-level government representatives and foreign diplomats from the UK and the US, the report said.
